Stonehenge
Designed for the National Trust visitor shop.
Did you know? Stonehenge is one of the most important sites for prehistoric rock art in Britain: a Bronze Age art gallery.
Believed to date from the earlier part of the Bronze Age between 1750BC and 1500BC, outlines of a dagger and axe blades were first discovered in 1953. There are over 115 prehistoric carvings on the stones, but until the first complete 3D laser scan of the stones in 2011, we only knew about 44 of them.
We don’t know why the carvings were made, but it might indicate just how important the introduction of metal tools was. Many metal objects were found with the Bronze Age burials in the Stonehenge landscape.
